Mercenaries is about rescuing the sister of an important ambassador from a Mercenary group. Assignments are secondary quests in Mass Effect, that are not mandatory to progress the game's story, but provide context and flavor by meeting interesting NPCs of all kind of Races, granting additional experience, and letting the player visit extraordinary and unique planets.

Mercenaries Walkthrough

Briefing

Nassana tells you that a mercenary group attacked a freighter and kidnapped her sister. She paid ransom money to them but she was never released. She explains to you that her well-known status as an ambassador, complicates a lot of things and the method she chose to resolve the situation could end up costing her everything. She asks for your help. Head to Sharjila to rescue Dahlia, her sister.

Facing the Pirates

Head to Sharjila in the macedon System of the Artemis Tau cluster. Once you land, you will notice that it is a level 1 pressure hazard planet. You can find the stronghold directly north of the landing site. You will find four towers, each with a Pirate Sniper on top, and on the ground there will be five Pirates, including a Krogan and another Pirate Sniper. Deal with the Sniper and the Krogan first. When they are down, enter the stronghold.

Once inside the structure, there are more Pirates to be found. You will find seven more and two Snipers. This time their leader, an Asari Slaver is here. Use the wall directly in front of the door as cover. You can use the common tactic of drawing one Enemy at a time.

Once they are all down, there are some crates you can grab. There is a medical kit on top of one of the crates near the door, an upgrade kit about mid-way along the right wall, a medical station and three crates in the room on the ground floor.

On the upper level, check the only room available to loot a Hardened Wall Safe, a Hardened Storage Locker and a malfunctioning object. You will see a desk in the room, investigate it to learn that the Asari Slaver, was actually Dahlia, Nassana's sister. Head back to the Citadel

Facing Nassana

Once back in the Citadel, go see Nassana to tell her about the whole situation. If you have enough Charm or Intimidate points, you can use them to access as she puts it "prototype asari mods" (Armali Council license), only available later in the game from Commander Rentola after the main Mission Virmire: Assault. You have a few options now:

How to unlock Mercenaries

You can obtain Mercenaries in three different ways:

  • You stumble upon a mercenary base on Sharjila, in the Macedon System. Entering and getting the Assignment from a terminal in the upper level. You can do this at any point after acquiring the Normandy, after finishing Citadel: Expose Saren. By doing this, the Assignment is renamed as UNC: Asari Diplomacy.
  • After completing one of the main plot worlds (Feros, Noveria or Therum), you will receive a comm from Nassana Dantius upon entering a new star system. Go back to the Embassy Lounge on the Citadel and speak with her. The Assignment will be labeled Asari Diplomacy.
  • Finally, you can get the information on the mercenaries from Yaroslev Tartakovsky's log on Noveria. You have to hack a terminal that requires easy Decryption at Peak 15, in a corner of the cafeteria where you first encounter the Rachni. If you have done one of the other two options, this won't be available. In this case the Assignment will be labeled as Mercenaries.
