Investigate Samples (or UNC: Colony of the Dead) is an Assignment in Mass Effect. Investigate Samples is one of the earlier Assignments that introduce the shadowy group Cerberus into the Mass Effect universe. Assignments are secondary quests in Mass Effect, that are not mandatory to progress the game's story, but provide context and flavor by meeting interesting NPCs of all kind of Races, granting additional experience, and letting the player visit extraordinary and unique planets.

Investigate Samples Walkthrough

Once you land on Chasca, you will see there are two civilian structures and a research base to the southwest of your position. These structures were originally used by the colonial team, but they are gone. Approach any of the three structures as you get close, and you will be attacked by Husks.

Defeat them all and prepare to explore the buildings.

Southern Structure

Open the door into the main room and get to cover. Many Husks will to attack you, try to take them out as fast as you can. The side rooms in this structured can't be accessed. On the lower level, you can find a sludge canister in the far corner, three crates and a malfunctioning object.
On the upper level you can find two Aid Stations, an upgrade kit and a Weapon locker. Once you are done looting, head out to another structure.

Northern Structure

Here there are 10 Husks, use the same strategy with them, don't let them get near you. Again the side rooms can't be accessed. On the lower level there is a single crate. On the upper level you can find a wetware kit, three storage lockers and an upgrade kit. Once you are done here, head to the last structure.

Science Station

You will find once again, more Husks at the outside entrance of the station. Take them all out and enter the facility. Head to the first station, there are no Enemies here. Prepare to fight more Husks in the main hold. Now head down to the pillar to the far right to get a med kit and enter the back rooms.
The left back room is completely empty, head to the right and in this room are a technician kit, a wetware kit, a locked crate, a secure Weapon locker and a malfunctioning object. Accessing the terminal will reveal that the whole pioneer team is dead, and whatever samples were provided to Cerberus, they killed all the colonists. Acquiring this information updates your journal and completes the Assignment.

How to unlock Investigate Samples

To obtain Investigate Samples you have to access a server node in the upper level of the ExoGeni HQ on Feros. You can find the terminal next to the PSI controls, that are used to sever the Geth Dropship's claw. In order to do so, you need a good Decryption skill. Once you do it Investigate Samples will be added to your journal,
The log will point you towards Chasca in the Matano system of the Maroon Sea cluster. You can also gain this Assignment if you simply land there and decide to investigate one of the research stations by yourself. As soon as you do it the name will change to UNC: Colony of the Dead.
