Proton Rounds is an Ammunition Upgrade in Mass Effect 1. Proton Rounds can be socketed in Weapons with available slots to enhance the effectiveness of your weapon's ammunition granting different effects like poison, cold and burn. Ammunition Upgrades, may also generate negative effects on your Weapon such as slow rate of fire or heat generation Proton Rounds can be purchased from Merchants or looted from containers.  

 

Proton Rounds Information:

Instead of projectiles, upgraded weapons release energized protons
capable of bypassing kinetic barrier shields. However, the actual
damage inflicted on the target is typically less than that of a standard
round.
