Old, Unhappy, Far-off Things is an Assignment in Mass Effect. Old, Unhappy, Far-off Things is related to the Spacer Pre-Service History, it won't be available if you choose Colonist or Earthborn during the character creation. Assignments are secondary quests in Mass Effect, that are not mandatory to progress the game's story, but provide context and flavor by meeting interesting NPCs of all kind of Races, granting additional experience, and letting the player visit extraordinary and unique planets.
Old, Unhappy, Far-off Things Walkthrough
- While walking through the Wards Access corridor on the Citadel, Commander Shepard is addressed by an old man nearby.
- As you approach him he introduces himself as Lieutenant Zabaleta and claims to know Commander Shepard's mother, Hanna Shepard, and proceeds to ask for 20 Credits. You can choose to do it or don't. If you do, your Paragon score increases by 2 points.
- After doing so, Commander Shepard can get in contact with the SSV Kilimanjaro, the Commander's mother currently assigned ship, from the Normandy's comm room to confirm Lieutenant Zabaleta's version. Hanna Shepard explains that both her and Zabaleta responded to the Mindoir raid. Mindoir, is a human farming colony raided by Batarian slavers.
- The atrocities the slavers inflicted on their victims weighted heavily on Zabaleta's mind and afflicted him with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. She states that he should go to the Veterans' Affairs Office to get help.
- When you return to Lieutenant Zabaleta, he asks for money again to buy whiskey to stop the dreams that haunt him.
- Commander Shepard can give him the money, set him up with an account at a grocery store to stop him from drinking or simply refuse again.
- You can follow Hanna Shepard's advice, and try to talk him about going yo the Veterans' Affairs Office, to do so you need to have Charm at level four and Intimidate at level 5.
How to unlock Old, Unhappy, Far-off Things
- To obtain Old, Unhappy, Far-off Things, the player must complete at least one of the core Missions of the game and is only available if Commander Shepard has the Spacer Pre-Service History.
